![]() ![]() ► With the Pope being the governmental head, and the church filled with corruption, the form of government was referred to as “ Pornocracy,” or “ Rule of the Harlots.” ► Religious leaders were intoxicated with power, leading to religious and political tyranny. ► The Pope held rights to lordship in this world, and supposedly in the world which was to come. ► Europe was at the point of total collapse.Ĭonditions in the Catholic Church – This Was the only Church in Europe at this Time The Crusades against Islam had already started. ![]() ![]() ► Italy was in chaos with anarchy spreading. ![]() ► Each castle became the center for a small number of highway robbers/brigands. ► Patriotism to a larger state disappeared. ► The peasant population clustered around the castle of the baron and became his vassals. Even though legends permeate that man’s life story, there was a genuine spiritual awakening that took place through his efforts, though it was short-lived. Writers within the Roman Catholic Church acknowledge that many of the stories surrounding Francis, who was from the town of Assisi, Italy, are legends–that is, fabricated stories that had the purpose of promoting a religious, political, or social agenda.
